Who We Are

APAM (Assosyason Peyizan Anba MòN) is a grassroots organization that emerged in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti. While based in Brooklyn, NY, our initiatives and members are deeply rooted in the southeastern region of Haiti, particularly in Jacmel.

APAM is a collective of 102 families organized around critical issues such as education, farming, agriculture, biodiversity, health, and self-empowerment through a self-sustaining lens. Our mission is to empower, uplift, and liberate the most marginalized members of the Anba MòN rural community, with a special focus on the elderly, disabled, cash-poor, women, and children in the countryside.

Our approach emphasizes community interdependence through member independence and accountability. We actively seek advanced training in agricultural and agroforestry practices, animal rearing, equitable education, and direct action. Since our inception in 2016, APAM has served as a radical alternative to the absence of grassroots coalitions, organizations, and government entities in the region.

Initially, APAM was conceived as a way to reflect back to Anba MòN farmers the impact of receiving aid from diaspora members who share their Haitian heritage. Today, APAM continues to grow into an interdependent, multi-project entity that remains accountable to its members and communities. Our fiscal sponsor, Black Women’s Blueprint (BWB), supports the multi-faceted initiatives we have launched since our founding, particularly those that emerged during the pandemic. While APAM is not formally affiliated with any established organizations, we collaborate with various groups and individuals when our objectives align.

Our Work and Initiatives

At APAM, our work is rooted in listening to the community—asking farmers, women, and youth about their needs—and raising funds to support self-directed projects. We recognize that without financial resources, the incentive for growth and development remains low. This requires us to challenge those with privilege to acknowledge how they can contribute, while also calling on those of Haitian ancestry to step up in support of their homeland.

  • Agroforestry & Farming: Providing goats, seedlings, and other agricultural support.

  • Youth Program: Establishing vocational education opportunities and a summer camp.

  • Ti Maché (Community Store): Launched during the March 2020 pandemic, this food drive evolved into a general store providing basic food staples for the community, reducing the need for long-distance travel to Jacmel. We are currently exploring microfinancing opportunities with elders in NYC who support this enterprise through zero-interest loans for women in Anba MòN.

  • Chicken Coop Project: Spearheaded by our youth program, which in turn launched an exchange where eight young adults run a summer camp for children aged 5 to 13.

At APAM, we believe true change starts at the individual, home, family, and community level. Our philosophy is grounded in the Kawaida principle of Umoja (Unity), which calls for unity in the family, community, nation, and race—extending outward to the world. Through unity, sustainability, and the deconstruction of existing systems of destitution, we strive to build a future where Haitian farmers can thrive under the right conditions.

We remain committed to learning, growing, and healing alongside our communities as we continue this journey together.
